The Last Ten Minutes

role on the film

In this film project, I took on the role of cinematographer, responsible for crafting the visual storytelling. The process began with developing detailed storyboards, which involved outlining the main scenes to ensure a coherent narrative flow. I sourced various stock images to create the initial storyboards that inspired my vision for each scene. I started by sketching rough visuals that highlighted key actions and significant details necessary for each moment in the film. Once the sketches were underway, I took the time to refine them further, adding annotations for dialogue and essential notes regarding camera angles to convey the intended atmosphere.

After completing this step, I compiled the storyboards into a cohesive format I could refer to while filming on set. This organised format enabled me to create a detailed shot list, including information on setup changes, lens adjustments, and descriptions of how each shot should look. Collaboration was key throughout this project; I mainly worked alongside the producer to develop an optimised shooting schedule that accommodated our production days, ensuring we efficiently managed the time constraints associated with working with our actress.

Reflection on the last ten minutes

Over the course of this project, I have learnt to appreciate the collaboration of multiple departments in order to create an excellent piece of work. Working alongside talented individuals from various disciplines, including production design, sound, and cinematography, has been incredibly enriching. Each department brought unique expertise and perspective, helping to shape the overall vision and execution of the film. In particular, the cinematography team played a crucial role in crafting the visual narrative, employing various techniques such as frame composition, lighting strategies, and camera movements that enhanced the storytelling. We utilised a range of equipment, including high-definition cameras, stabilisers, and lenses that provided versatility in achieving diverse shots. However, I encountered some challenges during the process; one significant setback occurred while filming the most intense scene. Unfortunately, the focus motor disconnected at a crucial moment, which affected the quality of the shots we captured. This incident served as a reminder of the importance of thorough preparation and teamwork. We had to adapt quickly, employing alternative methods to ensure we captured to the best of our abilities. Despite this setback, the experience has ultimately helped me grow as a filmmaker, emphasising the value of resilience and adaptability in overcoming unforeseen obstacles. Learning to navigate such challenges and maintaining clear communication with the team has been a vital part of my development throughout this project. It has also made me aware of the fact that I always need to have a spare piece of equipment on hand. Additionally, the incident reinforced the necessity of checking equipment regularly and coordinating with the tech crew well in advance. This experience will undoubtedly influence my future projects, as I strive to incorporate lessons learned into my workflow, ensuring a smoother shooting process with fewer technical hitches. Overall, it was a wonderful experience working with such talented creatives on a project that can be relatable to a variety of people.
